The Hymns of Old

In a day and age where the average Church projects the words of a song on the screen, we are sadly missing out on some things.

We are missing the feel of the hymnbook in our hands, there is something about the feel of the book in our hands as we sing that draws our attention to the written words on the page. Extra information such as who wrote the lyrics and who wrote the music, the year in which they were written and supplemental information.

We also have the notes. Even if you do not read music, you can get a feel for how the music rises and falls based on the notes.

From the sheet music above we see the song should be sung prayerfully, it is a traditional hymn written by John Newton in the year 1779.

Much of this information is lost when projected on the "big screen".

It is my hope that more Churches will return to the classic beloved hymns and traditionally handheld hymnals which create a more personal experience compared to a projection.
